Birthplace note. Quintana’s exact place of birth is unknown. His birth information was changed during the registration process. His official identification records Cauquenes, although he was not born there; based on the information available to him, Parral is considered the most probable birthplace.

Early years in Cauquenes

Quintana spent an important part of his childhood in Cauquenes, Chile. Two songs in particular marked his childhood: Gondwana’s “Nuestros Sueños”, which he associates with his father, Rubén Quintana, and Nino Bravo’s “Un beso y una flor”, associated with his mother, Rina Arellano.

During his school years in Cauquenes, a teacher encouraged him to participate in a singing competition and offered him a prize for singing “Un beso y una flor.” The song associated with his mother thus became connected with one of his earliest experiences of performing.

At the age of ten, Quintana wrote an early song, “Estrella y Sol.” The childhood composition is one of his earliest remembered attempts at songwriting, already joining affection with astronomical imagery.

Theatre and adolescence

While repeating eighth grade at Escuela Aníbal Pinto in Cauquenes, Quintana began experimenting with theatre. With the support of teacher Rossana Pineda and his eighth-grade classmates, he wrote his first play, Cuando caen los ángeles. The work centred on a disabled person and their circle of friends. Among the names he remembers from the casting process are Wladimir Vergara, Sebastián Valenzuela, Valentina Aravena, Chrishna Muñoz and Catalina Barrientos; other participants remain uncertain in his recollection.

During the same period, he participated in the school’s audiovisual group. There he became close friends with Catalina Agurto Hurtado, who introduced him to Lana Del Rey through “National Anthem.” Lana Del Rey would become one of the artists most closely associated with his personal musical references.

Secondary school, books and first recordings

Quintana later entered Liceo Claudio Norrutia, where he studied from first through fourth year of secondary school. His first book was published in 2014, followed by two further books in 2016. These years also marked the beginning of a more public musical period.

On 10 November he presented an album titled 10 de noviembre at the Aula Magna of Liceo Antonio Varas. It was followed by Transmutación, Vol. 1 and Parada 33. Quintana later removed these early records from his official discography. Songs remembered from this period include “Last Man Standing,” “Shakespeare,” “Metro,” “Parada 33” and an interview-based piece with Camila Bla. He also began making his first music videos, including work connected with Leyenda de verano and Carla Ormazábal. An early song written for his close friend Fernanda Cerecera was likewise withdrawn and later reworked in a new version.

Graduation and an independent path

Although Quintana completed secondary school, personal circumstances kept him from attending his graduation ceremony. He recalls that the themes of his books and songs also generated concern within the school community and that this limited his participation in some school activities. Over time, this experience weakened his sense of belonging to the institution and reinforced an increasingly autodidactic approach to his creative education.

He nevertheless distinguishes those experiences from the work of individual teachers and has continued to acknowledge what they taught him. Among the teachers he remembers with particular affection is Hortensia Agurto, to whom he later dedicated “Dear Teacher.” The song appears on the 2022 album Atypical Home.

Santiago and the development of his catalogue

Leyenda de verano was presented as a book in Santiago in 2017, including appearances at Palacio Álamos and later Teatro Puente. Quintana remembers the latter presentation as having limited attendance. His work continued to move simultaneously through literature, live performance and recorded music.

In 2019 he released Drama. During this period he also appeared twice in benefit editions of El Juego de la Botota. Further releases followed with Ramé and, during the COVID-19 period, the recording of Atypical Home, released in 2022. The album includes “Dear Teacher,” “Leyenda de Verano,” “49,” “Seven Heavens,” “Magokoro,” “1997” and other songs. He subsequently released 526, extending a catalogue that increasingly connected autobiographical material with recurring characters, places and memories.

Canada, publishing and a new stage

After moving to Canada, Quintana entered a particularly prolific period as an author, publishing more than twenty books as well as additional works including a trilogy and the horror book El viejo del saco, set in Cauquenes. His activity expanded beyond individual books and records into independent publishing, cultural projects and the development of the conceptual framework Neúmen Qvântum Quiméricvm.

In 2026, Ned Quintana began withdrawing the Ned stage identity and increasingly using Mattrick Quintana, or Mat Quintana, as his personal name. The transition marks a distinction between the accumulated artistic catalogue associated with Ned Quintana and the identity through which he intends to continue his life and future work.

Personal life and family

Quintana married Justin Ruttan on 11 July 2026. His later work has developed alongside independent publishing and nonprofit and cultural initiatives in Canada and Chile.

He is the son of Rubén Quintana Cortés and Rina Arellano Vallejos. His mother worked as a music teacher and his father as an automotive mechanic. In Quintana’s account of his childhood, both are remembered not only through their professions but through their relationship with their community — and through music: his father through Gondwana’s “Nuestros Sueños”, and his mother through Nino Bravo’s “Un beso y una flor.”

Ned Quintana x Nexus Quantum Quotient

No escribo únicamente historias.
